As a smaller firm, ATI is mindful of how it utilizes resources, and in any
investment, we spend a lot of time early on brainstorming and trying to
identify all the stakeholders, especially those who might be opposed to what
we’re doing. It’s easy to believe that any project you’re advancing is great, but
there will be those who do not share your perspective. Those are the voices
that do not show up on a spreadsheet, but they are influential and they have
the potential to change the outcome of a deal.
Infrastructure is more than just a spreadsheet, and these are the
circumstances in which stakeholder engagement is particularly important.
What could be the consequences of not engaging all the right
stakeholders properly?
A well-known example of the importance of stakeholder engagement is what
happened with Amazon’s proposed new headquarters in Queens, New York
City, back in 2019. After a long and well-advertized selection process, the
company picked Queens as the location for its second corporate
headquarters. But the backlash from the community and other stakeholders
was such, that Amazon ultimately pulled out of the deal.
One of ATI’s main investments is also in Queens, NY. ATI is the secondlargest equity sponsor in JFK Millennium Partners, the consortium
redeveloping Terminal 6 at the JFK International Airport. It’s a $4.2 billion
project, and it has benefitted from strong stakeholder engagement and input
from local community leaders and businesses. Through our representation
on the board, we’re ensuring that the priorities of a broad range of
stakeholders are represented throughout the construction and operation of
the project.
The Terminal 6 project is a major economic driver in Queens and in New York
City more broadly. Its success, which benefits both local stakeholders and
ATI’s shareholders, is partly due to an effective stakeholder engagement
plan, which becomes even more evident when compared to Amazon’s story.
